The museum is located in the most northern point of the Curonian Spit called Kopgalis. There, the 98-kilometer-long Curonian Spit peninsula ands and the Klaipėda Port Gates can be seen. The goals of the museum are to collect, store, study, preserve, restore and promote the valuables that reflect the history of seafaring of Lithuania as a maritime republic and the variety of sea nature.
